It was designed by Edward Welby Pugin.\r\nThe information in the acquisition file (81/1720) states that this tile was removed from the ‘Pugin’ floor in 1978. The donor also states that it is a “tile from the 1854-60 parts, ie nave, crossing or choir”.\r\nAs far as can be determined, EW Pugin was commissioned in 1859 to design the church – this date does not tie in with the known building dates of the church (1857-1860). The consecration date of 1860 could possibly only refer to the east end of the church with the nave not completed until a later date. The tile is characteristic of Godwin’s work in the 1850s. Also, we cannot confirm from which part of the church the tile was removed. According to information supplied by the current abbot, about 1965/6 the then abbot underwent a radical restructuring of the east end of the abbey church. He removed the original choir screen and high altar and destroyed St David’s Chapel. In 1978, Abbot Jerome began a process to restore the sanctuary and the crossing. He also was raising floor levels in this area. It is likely it was at this time that this tile was removed or recovered and was not needed for the new works. This indicates that the majority of the works in the 1960s and 1970s was in the east end of the abbey church.
