This was one of the <I>Khamsah, or Five Tales</I>, of the 12th-century poet Nizami Ganjavi, one of the great figures of Persian literature. In this scene, Shirin (front centre) has arrived with her entourage to visit the sculptor Farhad (top left) as he works. Jealous of Farhad's love for Shirin, Khusraw has set Farhad the apparently impossible task of carving a road in the living rock of Mount Bisutun.\n\r\nThis scene was probably copied from a contemporary lithograph. The lithographic printing process was introduced to Iran in the 1840s, and almost immediately inexpensive copies of the great classics were produced and widely circulated. In the mid-19th century, tiles of this type, with unitary themes, began to be sold as individual objects for display rather than as multi-part friezes.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Square tile, fritware, decoration painted under the glaze, moulded frame, depicting an episode from the verse romance of <I>Khusraw and Shirin</I>, in which Shirin, the Armenian princess, rides with her attendants to visit the sculptor Farhad as he works. \n \r\nThe tile was purchased with an accompanying square black wood frame (406:A-1887).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, underglaze painted in polychrome: blue, turquoise, yellow, pink and black","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qajar","id":"AAT21708"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2017KJ8203","2017KJ8197","2014HE9552","2018KT8899"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES342016"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES342016"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Frame","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tehran","id":"x35420"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Iran","id":"x30220"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Isfahan","id":"x28926"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880-1885","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1885-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"14.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"29/03/2017","earliest":"2017-03-29","latest":"2017-03-29"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"29/03/2017","earliest":"2017-03-29","latest":"2017-03-29"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":".","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bought Proctor & Co., 428 Oxford Street, London, £3 3 shillings.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tile, fritware painted under the glaze, with a moulded border, depicting princess Shirin and her retinue visiting the sculptor Farhad as he carves a road into the mountainside at Khusraw's command, Iran, probably Tehran, 1880-85","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["406-1887","406A-1887"],"accessionNumberNum":"406","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1887,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LL3298"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
