Sugar bowl and cover\r\n1750-1755\r\nhard-paste porcelain\r\nh 8,5; width 10 cm\r\nno mark\r\ninv: C.113&A-1978\r\ngift: Mr Steve Kapitany\r\nThis plain white sugar bowl has a lobed oval shape with spiral ribs, a decoration which is usually referred to as “cabbage leaves”. The domed cover has the same type of spiral ribbing and a knob in the shape of a flower. The glaze is quite bright but the colour of the clay, which has some dark impurities in it, tends to be slightly beige. This object belonged to a breakfast set of a type that is normally dated to the years from1750 to 1755(see also A. Biancalana, in LAMANIFATTURA TOSCANA DEIGINORI 1998, p. 108-109, cat. 7-8). The cabbage leaf motif in white is probably derived from the spiral design that is found on Imari type porcelain of the 1730s (MORENA 2007,p. 367, cat. 346). This decoration can probably be identified with those mentioned in the inventory of the warehouse in Livorno in 1757 on page 21: “cups with bas-relief leaves” or as “ribbed white” (AGL, I, 2, f. 37, Fabbrica delle porcellane di Doccia, Scritture e Documenti, n. 7, p. 21). This type of decoration continued to be used at Doccia in a later era in combination with tin-glaze (G. Turchi, in LUCCA E LE PORCELLANE DELLA MANIFATTURA GINORI 2001, p. 123, cat. 59).\r\nA. d’A.\r\nBibliography: unpublished\r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"lobed","id":"x44258"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"},{"text":"leaf","id":"AAT11892"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"SUGAR BOWL AND COVER\r\nPorcelain\r\nITALY (DOCCIA); about 1750-60\r\nGift of Mr Steve Kapitany\r\nC.113&A-1978\r\n(Label draft attributed to John V.
