He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm, and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. He invited many well-known painters of the day to design decorations and also to paint some wares directly.  Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours, inspired by the ceramics of the Middle and Far East. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Panel; portion of a frieze, enamelled earthenware, floral decoration on light blue ground, with border of dark blue and yellow, the design in Persian style, 19th century French\r\n\r\nPanel (in two parts with 17A-1865) painted in colours in persian style","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Joseph-Théodore Deck","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2018LD0925","2018LE3913"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES340448"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES340448"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"tile","id":"AAT10676"}],[{"text":"tile","id":"AAT10676"}],[{"text":"fragment","id":"AAT117130"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1863","earliest":"1863-01-01","latest":"1863-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"176","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"total length of two parts; 17 & 17a-1865","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Total length of two parts, 17 &17A-1865","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'TH DECK 1863' painted on reverse of both parts","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"see also 17A-1865"}],"objectHistory":"In two parts: 17 & 17A-1865","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portion of a frieze, enamelled earthenware with floral decoration in Persian style, Theodore Deck, 19th century French ","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["17:1-1865","17:2-1865"],"accessionNumberNum":"17","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1865,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
