They were very simply made by placing a picture on a piece of wood and cutting it into shapes. Some pieces might interlock, but most of the puzzle was just pushed into place. This meant that it would not stay in one piece very easily. To solve this, the outer edges of some puzzles, like this example, had large interlocking pieces that would hold the whole puzzle together. Maps were very popular with the early puzzle makers. Countries or counties made excellent and obvious shapes.","physicalDescription":"Design: hand coloured engraving mounted on wood and cut into non interlocking pieces\nNo. of Pieces: 30, one broken and repaired\r\nNo. of Players: any\r\noriginal wooden box with sliding lid; engraved label","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Darton, William","id":"A5006"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"hand coloured","id":"AAT133555"},{"text":"cut","id":"AAT53069"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-coloured engraving on wood","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2010ED0899","2006AA7505","2006AU4658"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324046"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"NONE","id":"THES49066"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dissected Puzzle","id":""}],[{"text":"The World","id":""}],[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"The World","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"01/09/1820","earliest":"1820-09-01","latest":"1820-09-01"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"September 1st, 1820 William Darton, 58 Holborn Hill, London, Map, Print & Chart Warehouse","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"printed","position":"on lower edge","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on lower edge; printed"}],"objectHistory":"Beneath lid is a sheet of paper pasted on which advertises other Darton's products","historicalContext":"Puzzle shows a map of the eastern and western hemispheres","briefDescription":"Hand coloured geographical dissected puzzle, The World, published in England by William Darton in 1820","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"The collector's Guide to Children's Games & Puzzles, CG Goodfellow, Apple Press, 1991"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.3229-1938","E.3229A-1938"],"accessionNumberNum":"3229","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1938,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Dissected Puzzle","Box"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"2000-03-05","availableToBook":false}}
