At the age of 8, Adriana's father Francis Scalamandré noted his daughter's artistic skils and added her to the payroll of his company, Scalamandré Silks (now known simply as Scalamandré), as a designer. The story goes that when this was questioned by the Inland Revenue Bureau and an inspector arrived to investigate why a child was on the payroll, Adriana demonstrated her skills by creating a design of Picasso-style profiles representing herself and the agents' features, which was later made into a textile of which the agent was given two bolts.\n\nAmong the famous clients of Scalamandré textiles was William Randolph Hearst, who commissioned a furnishing fabric printed with cherubs that was designed by Adriana at the age of 12. This textile was used for upholstery in one of the reception rooms at Hearst's mansion at San Simeon.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"printed, 1949, USA; Scalamandré, Adriana for Scalamandré Silks, NY","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.222-1949"],"accessionNumberNum":"222","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1949,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-18","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
