Edmond - known as the 'Headlam Gift'.  \n\r\nMISC.1275-1991 is 'The Cavalry Game' card game, the rules of which reference a list of other games by the same publisher. One of these listed games is a '\"Golliwogg\" card game'. The actual Golliwog card game is MISC.307-1986.\n\n[RF: MA/1/H1357]\n\nThe original golly was a central character in a series of books published between 1895 and 1909. Bertha Upton (1849–1912) wrote the books and her daughter, Florence Kate Upton (1873–1922), illustrated them. They based the character ‘Golliwogg’ (as it was originally spelled) on a doll Florence owned as a child growing up in 1880s America. The appearance and clothing of the doll (see B.493-1997) is based on the ‘blackface minstrel’ figure, a 19th-century racial caricature of African Americans. Blackface minstrel shows were performed by white actors and singers, who parodied African Americans by darkening their skins with shoe polish or burnt cork. These portrayals perpetuated many negative stereotypes and were steeped in racism. The shows originated in the USA, with the first widely known blackface character, ‘Jim Crow’, appearing around 1830. Soon after it became popular in the UK, which developed its own blackface traditions. \r\n\r\nFlorence moved to the UK in the 1890s, where the Uptons’ books became very popular. Their Golliwogg character was not copyrighted, allowing multiple representations of the golly to enter the public domain. The character featured in British toys, games, textiles, ceramics and children’s books, and was used as a mascot by the food manufacturer, Robertson’s, from about 1910. From the 1980s the character’s popularity began to wane as campaigners fought against the racist stereotypes that the golly represented. Robertson’s continued to promote the figure as part of a British ‘national tradition’ until 2001, when they stopped using the golly in their branding. The Brigades have been formed in order of the numbers, not by the names.  It will be seen that in the 5th Brigade, for instance, there are the 4th Hussars, 3rd Lancers and 6th Dragons.  By this means it is hoped that the players will remember which number belongs to each regiment.  In the same the 3rd Brigade is composed of four Regiments instead of three.  This is done simply to keep the numbers in order.  It is taken for granted that the players know that there are seven D G Regiments.\n\nRULES\n1.  The game to be played by from three to six players.\n2.  The whole of the pack should be well shuffled and dealt round, after which each player should arrange his hand in Brigades, where possible.\n3.  The object of the player holding one or more cards belonging to a Brigade is to obtain the rest of the soldiers belonging to his Brigade.  The player who first obtains four Brigades makes a Cavalry Division and wins the game.\n4.  The player on the left of the dealer beings by asking anyone of the other players for a card which will help him to form a Brigade.\n5.  When a card is demanded of a player and he he holds it, he must forfeit it and the successful caller may proceed to demand from that player or any other player another card until he fails when the turn passes to the last player he has asked.\n6.  If a player asks for a card which he already holds, the turn passes to the player from whom he asked it. \n7.  A player must not ask for a soldier unless he has either the Brigade card or a soldier forming the Brigade.\n8. Also subject variations occur and some are educational, for example The Counties of England.\n\nThe object of the game is for each player to collect as many complete `families' as possible.  \nOne of the players deals out all the cards.  If more than one round is played, the players take it in turn to deal.  It does not matter if some players have one card more than others.\nEach player looks at his cards and sorts them into families.\nIt is important that players keep their cards hidden from each other.  With young children it is a good idea if they can lay their cards out of view of the other players.\nWhen all the players are ready, the person to the dealer's left asks any player, by name, for a particular card (eg Master Baker).  He must already possess at least one of member of the same family, ie Mrs. Baker.  If the person asked has the card, he must give it to the first player, who may again ask anybody for a card of any family as long as he already has one card belonging to that family.  \nHe continues to do this until he fails to obtain a card.
