This incomplete set of 19 cards is from the Royal Game of Mother Goose. Each card is printed with a title and illustration of a character, and a rhyming couplet. Each verse gives a moral lesson and a reward or forfeit.\r\n\r\nFor example, a card showing a boy hitting a smaller boy has the title \"You let me alone or I'll heave a stone at yer\" and the couplet states \"Cowardly custard who hits little boys/Must pay in four for breaking their toys\". The cards are turned up in turn with players following the printed instructions. Whichever player turns up the card showing Mother Goose wins.","physicalDescription":"Design: woodcuts on buff card","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Richard Marsh","id":"A11586"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Woodcut","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woodcut printing on card","categories":[{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006AU4599"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}],[{"text":"Card","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Each illustration has a title, an illustration and a couplet which gives a moral lesson and a reward or forfeit.
