Morris was the artist and designer who was the greatest single influence on the Arts and Crafts movement and the most successful textile designer and manufacturer of his day. Morris revived the craft of block printing and vegetable dyeing and in his own home he set up looms for tapestry weaving and the hand knotting of carpets. He was highly influenced by historical patterns and was one of the most knowledgeable textile historians of the late 19th century.\r\n\r\nMorris & Co. was founded by William Morris in 1875, producing textiles commercially for sale in two London shops. Alexander Morton established his textile company in Scotland in 1867 and manufactured silk and wool fabrics and gauzes for Morris & Co. until Morris set up his Merton Abbey Works in 1881, where he produced his own textiles.\r\n\r\nThis complex design was suitable for curtains and hangings and was available in different scales and colourings.","physicalDescription":"Length of furnishing fabric with woven pattern of pairs of doves and stylised foliage in pink, blue and green","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Morris, William","id":"A8676"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Alexander Morton & Co.","id":"A9032"},"association":{"text":"weaver","id":"AAT25367"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Morris & Co.","id":"A1365"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wool","id":"AAT243430"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woven silk and wool double cloth","categories":[{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Furnishing fabrics","id":"THES280526"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2011ET0957","2006BD3166"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES309795"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Darvel","id":"x34759"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1879","earliest":"1879-01-01","latest":"1879-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1879-1919","earliest":"1879-01-01","latest":"1919-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Morris & Co.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"34 3/4","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"taken from register","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"25 3/4","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"taken from register","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Dove and Rose', furnishing fabric, woven silk and wool, British, designed by William Morris and made by Alexander Morton & Co. for Morris & Co., 1879","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Parry, Linda. <font -u>British Textiles from 1850 to 1900</font> London : Victoria and Albert Museum 1993.
