Horse racing, and in particular steeplechasing, gave rise to a new design of playing board. This is often folded in three rather than two. The playing surface is long and oval-shaped, and the playing spaces are narrow and angled. The basic rules of race games are still used, however, with turns missed and players moving backwards and forwards as directed. This particular game is played anticlockwise.","physicalDescription":"Design: hand coloured lithograph mounted on card; double fold; embossed red paper on back with a dimond and spsot design\nNo. of squares: 100\nSquares illustrated: some\nSquare numbering: all\nSquares titled: none\nSubject of starting square: horses gathering\nSubject of ending square: none","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"card","id":"x30344"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand-colouring","id":"AAT133555"},{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-coloured lithograph on card","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006AU3795"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR001","id":"THES340938"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Board Game","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1865","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1865-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"73.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The game has five fences with a fallen horse and rider at the second.
