His interest in primitive art initially manifested itself in the early 1960s in a series of works distantly based on Jomon period ceramic figurines with titles such as earthen figure (dogu) and clay image (deizo). His mature style developed in the late 1960s when he made the first of his famous horses modelled after haniwa tomb figurines of the Tumulus period (258-646). The work shown here belongs to a period in the early 1980s when he was experimenting with themes such as wind, clouds and sun.\r\nAlthough Suzuki also works in porcelain, he is chiefly known for his warmly coloured stoneware forms. The combination of Shigaraki clay, iron-bearing slip and ash glaze fired in an oxidizing atmosphere is a formula that he has used consistently since the mid-1960s.","physicalDescription":"The severely geometric composition of this particular piece, the symmetry of which is emphasized by the clear delineation of its central axis, is softened in a manner typical of Suzuki's work by the irregular tooling of the clay surface.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Suzuki, Osamu (Ji)","id":"A3199"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tooled","id":"AAT53876"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with tooled surface and oxide colouration","categories":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Showa","id":"AAT18568"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BE6400"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"142","id":"THES49868"},"free":"","case":"16","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kyoto","id":"x31966"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1981","earliest":"1981-01-01","latest":"1981-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"57.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"16","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"impressed","position":"on back","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Makers's mark and date","note":"Makers's mark and date; on back; impressed"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased for the Museum with funds supplied by Madame Tomo Kikuchi, whose collection was shown as 'Japanese Ceramics Today', V&A, 1983.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture, 'Cloud Image', Suzuki Osamu [Ji], Japan, dated 1981","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Rupert Faulkner 'Contemporary Japanese Ceramics', 'Orientations', December 1981, p.37."}],"production":"Biographical reference: 'Japanese Ceramics Today', (V&A, 1983) p.129.\r\nKyoto","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"SCULPTURE ENTITLED \"CLOUD IMAGE\"\r\nStoneware with tooled surface and dual colouration\r\nMaker's mark and date impressed on back\r\nSuzuki Osamu (Ji) (born 1926)\r\n1981\r\nFE.13-1984\r\n\r\nSuzuki Osamu has been a central figure in the avant-garde Sodeisha movement since its founding in the early 1950s.
