Munns’ calico-printing manufactory was at Crayford, a town to the south east of London. A number of textile manufacturers were established there, taking advantage of the river Cray, a tributary of the river Thames, for the abundant water their work needed. Munns was in business from the 1760s until his bankruptcy in 1781, combining the trades of calico-printing and gunpowder-making.\r\n\r\nBy the mid-eighteenth century, wood-block printing on cotton and linen textiles had developed to a high standard. The dyeing techniques used to produce the strong fast colours on imported Indian chintzes which had dazzled European customers in the seventeenth century had been mastered. A commentator on the state of British textile arts in 1756 wrote : \"chintz…can imitate the richest silk brocades, with a great variety of beautiful colours\".","physicalDescription":"Design for a printed textile; 'lace' stripe and meander, with fantastic flowers, in pale pinks, blues and greens on white.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"water-colour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and ink","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HL6493","2006AT5764"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"T","shelf":"53","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1760s-1770s","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1779-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'John Munns No A1064'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'Cutt Compleat'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'Cutt print Compleat D(ark) Red, 2 purple grounds 1 pale red do'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour, design for a printed textile, 1760s or 1770s.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hefford, Wendy  <u>The Victoria & Albert Museum’s Textile Collection: Design for Printed Textiles in England from 1750 to 1850.<u>   London: V&A Publications, 2002"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers","id":"x31099"},{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"},{"text":"stripes","id":"AAT10230"},{"text":"meander","id":"AAT165279"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["7275:297"],"accessionNumberNum":"7275","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-09","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-21","availableToBook":false}}
