As attacks by the U-boats increased, grain provisions dwindled alarmingly.\r\n\r\nThrough the slogan, and a telling juxtaposition of imagery, the secure domesticity of the family at breakfast - with mother slicing the precious loaf of bread - is shown to be dependent on the heroic efforts of the Merchant Navy and the country's ship-building programme. Although strongly idealised, especially the Gibson-girl-like mother, the breakfast scene is intended to represent a working class household.\r\n\r\n[Margaret Timmers, 'British Design at Home', p.104]","briefDescription":"Poster, 'Thank God And the Sailors For My Good Breakfast', Printed by Banks Ltd., 1917","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"shipyards","id":"AAT403"},{"text":"ships","id":"AAT82981"},{"text":"families","id":"AAT55474"},{"text":"breakfast","id":"AAT39633"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.403-1982"],"accessionNumberNum":"403","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1982,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-15","availableToBook":false}}
