He was a Benedictine monk at Weston Priory in Vermont for twenty-five years and worked as an artist-in-residence with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie from 1985. His work followed a studio craft tradition that embraced an Oriental aesthetic, and was characterised in particular by his masters of Chinese - inspired glazes. He died in 2007. This handsome decorative plate demonstrates Brother Thomas' superb handling of the material and reduction glazes.","physicalDescription":"Large porcelain plate, covered in a copper red and blue crystal glaze, reduction fired with a gold rim.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bezanson, Thomas (Brother)","id":"AUTH330614"},"association":{"text":"potter","id":"AAT25414"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"glaze","id":"AAT15105"}],"techniques":[{"text":"thrown","id":"AAT53908"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, copper glaze, reduction, gold rim","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2019MH2705"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341034"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Pennsylvania","id":"x29071"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Benedictine Sisters of Erie"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1985-2007","earliest":"1985-01-01","latest":"2007-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Presented by Bernard and Suzanne Pucker in honour of Sir Harry Solomon","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"18.25","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions that came with object","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Large plate, porcelain with copper red glaze with blue crystals, Brother Thomas, Pennsylvania, 1985-2007","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.69-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"69","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
