It is not possible to identify this ivory securely, but a number of other examples have an image of Amitabha in their crowns, establishing their identity as Avalokitesvara. All of the known examples are remarkably close in every detail, indicating that they follow a common model. It has been suggested that this may be the famous wooden Nepalese Avalokitesvara in the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Whether this ivory example was produced in Tibet or Nepal remoins problematic.","briefDescription":"Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, carved ivory, Nepalese style, date uncertain, possibly 18th century, Nepal or Tibet.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"PUBLISHED S.Kramrisch, \" Pala and Sena Sculpture\", Rupam, No.40, 1929, pls. 34-35.
