The kala (Indian kirttimukha) is of south Indian derivation. It serves as a protective presence, guarding the enclosure from the forces of evil. This lintel would have served over a narrow doorway, the foliate design continuing down the doorjams. The absence of a lower jaw and the stylised foliage point to a central Javanese provenance.","briefDescription":"Volcanic Stone, Central Java","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Central Java, Indonesia","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"Hindu-Buddhist","id":"x32294"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Door Lintel\r\n900–1000\r\nThe face depicted here, called the kala face, is a protective\r\nemblem guarding the enclosure within from evil forces.\r\nIt is derived from the Indian kirttimukha, an emanation of\r\nthe Hindu deity Shiva.
