In order to get the thin sheets of overlaid metal to adhere to the iron's surface it is first roughened with chisel cuts and the thin sheets applied with pressure are gripped by the ridges and furrows so created. Beer jugs of this type were made until the start of the 20th century in Derge and Chamdo in eastern Tibet.","physicalDescription":"Iron beer jug with damascened decoration in gold, silver and copper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"iron","id":"AAT11002"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"forged","id":"AAT54033"},{"text":"damascened","id":"AAT54019"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Iron, damscened in gold, silver and copper, with brass fittings","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2011ER1046","2011ER1045","2018KX5068"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"47A","id":"THES49797"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Chamdo","id":"x36374"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century-19th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Obtained by Oliver Coales in Chamdo, Eastern Tibet.","historicalContext":"This vessel form, of central Asian origin, was probably adapted by Tibetan craftsmen from Chinese models.
