He borrowed from Neoclassical ornament but his designs also included Egyptian and Chinoiseries motifs.\r\n\r\nDagoty's elegant wares won him the patronage of Empress Joséphine. At the height of production, in 1807, he employed over a hundred workers, and exported his porcelain to Russia. After the fall of the Empire, manufacture continued under the protection of the Duchesse d'Angloulême, the only surviving child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.\r\n\r\nBetween 1816 and 1820, Dagoty worked in partnership with François Maurice Honoré. In 1817, Dagoty and Honoré received a commission from President James Monroe of the United States for a dinner service and matching dessert service.","physicalDescription":"Design for a cup with black ground, and with handle lined in gold; the cup is supported by gold lion's paws. The rim is lined with bronze and the cup is decorated with a motif in bronze of a winged classical goddess (possibly Iris; she is winged and holds a caduceus), and a warrior dressed for battle and bearing a spear and shield with serpent motif. The goddess is presenting the warrior with a helmet.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dagoty, Pierre-Louis","id":"AUTH387615"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and gouache drawing on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Empire","id":"AAT21269"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017JU5069"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"C","shelf":"120","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1810","earliest":"1805-01-01","latest":"1814-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"9.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The design on this cup is taken from a Greek vase owned by Richard Hamilton and recorded in his 1791 catalogue 'Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases', illustrated by Johann Tischbein.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for a cup by Pierre-Louis Dagoty, Paris, ca.1810","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Dagoty á Paris: La manufacture de porcelaine de l'impératrice, by Régine de Plinval de Guillebon \r\n(Paris: Éditions Somogy d'Art, 2006)."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Collection of engravings from ancient vases mostly of pure Greek workmanship discovered in sepulchres in the kingdom of the Two Sicilies but chiefly in the neighbourhood of Naples during the course of the years MDCCLXXXIX and MDCCLXXXX now in the possession of Sir Wm.
