The painting shows the interior of Sheepshanks's own study at Barnes near Putney. In preparation for the painting, Cooke visited various antiques dealers in London's Wardour Street and numerous curiosity shops in order to make up a convincing assemblage of antiques and botanical and zoological specimens. Sheepshanks collected eleven paintings by Cooke, as well as a number of preparatory watercolour studies.","physicalDescription":"Study for 'The Antiquary's Cell', image shows a chair; a table with books and a casket on it adna gilt framed painting and scrolls below it; on the other side of the chair more books and a metal jug are visible.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cooke, Edward William (RA, FRS, FSA)","id":"A8271"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009CP9350","2023NP7390"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"10","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1835","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1835-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"FA.42[O]","id":"O56231"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Given by John Sheepshanks, 1857","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"178","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"217","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Sheepshanks Gift, 1857","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour by E.
