The collector has had the bronze for over 15 years.\r\n\r\nI feel confident of my source and hence purchased it gladly last summer.</i>\n\r\nThe identity of the former collector mentioned by Wiener has not been established.\n\r\nFollowing Doris Wiener’s death in 2011, her daughter Nancy Wiener, who was also a dealer in Asian art and inherited her mother’s collection, was arrested and pleaded guilty to conspiring in the international smuggling and trafficking of looted objects. This included apparently destroying records related to both her and her mother's businesses.\n\r\nAs of September 2026, no further information about the provenance of this figure is known to the V&A.\r\n\r\nV&amp;A Registered File 88/2087","historicalContext":"This figure of a female nature-spirit (yaksi), standing in a relaxed posture, is related to the famous tree-kicking pose (salabhanjika) seen in the bracket-figures of early Indian temple sculpture.  In this example the yaksi holds a lotus (padma) in her lower hand whilst a hamsa (duck) catches droplets which fall from its petals.  The figure is adorned with jewellery and wears her long hair gathered in an elaborate spiral.
