His right hand is held open in the gesture of giving (<i>varada-mudrā</i>), while his left holds the stem of a lotus flower that rises over his shoulder to support a small palm-leaf, or pothi-format, book. He wears a close-fitting wrap skirt (<i>dhoti</i>) and the ornaments of princely rank, including jewelled armbands, a necklace, and a crown with a crescent-shaped ornament. Stylistically, this small lost-wax cast copper alloy sculpture can be identified with Central Java, Indonesia, and dated to the late 8th or 9th century.
