The lacquer was applied to a fabric core and then painted. Its decoration depicts a sunrise over the sea, a popular scene in the iconography adopted at the rise of the Chinese Communist Party's power in 1949. Despite the imagery's associations, this object was produced in a privately owned factory before the collectivization of craft production was introduced in the 1950s.","physicalDescription":"A baluster vase with a high shoulder ( the so-called 'meiping' shape)\r\nThe decoration depicts sunrise over the sea, with finishing boats setting sale.\r\nThe wood stand is on three feet, which are continued upwards to support the lower part of the body of the vase.\r\nFactory mark on the base: ''Zhongguo/Fuzhou di'er tuotai qiqi chang''( No. 2 Bodiless Lacquer Factory, FuZhou, China) with four other undeciphered characters, over a logo of the globe.\r\nThree labels on the base of vase: '14', '36' and 'Fu-8-2'.
