Until 1879, when it became part of Japan, the islands were an independent kingdom. Robes such as this were worn only by members of the  Ryūkyūan royal family. The pattern of maple leaves has been created using stencils and bright mineral pigments. This technique is known as 'bingata'.  Normally in bingata only one stencil is used to create the pattern, but here two have been used: one for the maples leaves and one for the fine black branches. The latter are quite calligraphic in style. which is again unusual for bingata, and reveal the skill of the stencil cutter and the dyer.","physicalDescription":"Robe of stencilled dyed (bingata) cotton in colours on a blue ground. Three different cottons are used, one on the outside, one as a lining and a third to form a collar and facings down the front. The garment has broad straight sleeves, and is slightly flared from the shoulders. The cotton on the outside of the kimono has a design of maples outlined in white, some with pink or mauve centres, and fine black branches on blue ground. The lining is pale blue with wavy white stems linking groups of delicately coloured flowers. The facing is striped with a dark and light blue with groups of interconnected coloured squares at intervals.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Resist-dyed","id":"AAT53053"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stencilled cotton","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BG5656","2006AV8270","2006AN1523","2013GB4264"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES404737"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Robe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shuri","id":"x32231"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1870","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"132","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"124.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sleeve to sleeve","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Robe of stencilled dyed cotton (bingata), Shuri, 1800-1870 ","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Shuri, Ryûkyû Islands.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.295-1960"],"accessionNumberNum":"295","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1960,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-01","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-12","availableToBook":false}}
