He was closely associated both with Yanagi Soetsu (1889-1961), the philosopher-critic on whose theories the movement was founded, and the pioneer English studio potter Bernard Leach (1887-1979), whom he helped establish the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, during the early 1920s.\r\n\r\nThe Mingei movement developed in early twentieth-century Japan as a social and aesthetic crusade. It held ideas in common with the English Arts and Crafts theorists John Ruskin and William Morris about the value of hand-work and the negative effects of industrialisation and mass production. It actively sought to save and revive Japanese folk-craft traditions, which were becoming sidelined due to the forces of modernisation and urbanisation, and was part of a broader cultural movement in which Japan sought to articulate and assert a sense of national identity in the face of burgeoning westernisation.","physicalDescription":"Decoration: Spray on each side","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hamada, Shoji","id":"A1085"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with brown tenmoku glaze","categories":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Showa","id":"AAT18568"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BA0978"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"142 (VA)","id":"THES49868"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mashiko","id":"x32161"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1935","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Contemporary Art Society through Ernest Marsh","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Japan, modern crafts, studio, ceramics; Hamada","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Contemporary Arts Society catalogue no.147\n'Retrospective Exhibition of Shoji Hamada', National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo, 19770"}],"production":"Biographical reference: L.
