As the manufacturing sector has increasingly moved overseas in recent years, these photographs serve as monuments to a vanished era. Yet they are more than factual documents. Inspired by the modern design philosophy of the German Bauhaus school, Broomfield employed dramatic lighting and unconventional camera angles to imbue his photographs of workers and their environment with heroism.
