He studied in Karlsruhe and was initially a designer at the Meissen Porcelain factory. From 1908 he was associated with the Berlin Secession. In 1919 he was appointed Professor of Printmaking in the Staatlichen Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Berlin, a post he held until 1934. From 1947 to 1951 he was Professor of Printmaking and Illustration at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Stuttgart.
