He went on to work with Gill at his Ditchling community until 1921 when he left for Switzerland to train for the priesthood. Chute gave Gill a new spiritual direction and introduced him to the idea of lay monasticism. They remained life-long friends and correspondents and Gill recorded in his autobiography that Chute was \"the only man and therefore the only priest with whom I have been able to talk without shame and without reserve\".
