He was a member of the ‘The Algorists’, a term coined in 1995 to describe a set of artists, who, since the 1960s and 1970s, had been working with a shared interest in the use of bespoke software for generating art using the computer.\r\n\r\nThis is the first in a series of unique works created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 'Baby' computer, built at the University of Manchester in 1948. The Universal Turing Machine was a model created by Alan Turing, from which the circuit logic underpinning every general computer, including the Baby, descends. The binary code on the right of Verostko's image is that used in the Universal Turing Machine. \r\n\r\nThe work adopts the format of an illuminated manuscript, with the image on the left and the text, with hand-applied gold leaf, on the right. The artist would have had considerable exposure to the medium of illuminated manuscripts during the 18 years he spent as a monk in the monastry of St Vincent Archabbey in Pennsylvania, America.","physicalDescription":"This work depicts a colour, multi-pen plotter drawing on the left side and a set of computer-generated binary code with gold leaf on right side.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Roman Verostko","id":"A28000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"coloured ink","id":"AAT126356"},{"text":"gold leaf","id":"x33207"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plotter drawing","id":"x43893"},{"text":"computer-generated","id":"x44521"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Multi-pen plotter drawing with gold leaf","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Computer Art","id":"THES49037"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009BX5911","2009BX5914","2009BX5913","2009BX5912"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"TOASTRACK","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1998","earliest":"1998-01-01","latest":"1998-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given anonymously","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"55.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"76.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Manchester I'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In pencil, in lower left side.
