The decoration is very varied, with some having cast  ornaments or decoration of engraving or chasing.  The earliest examples were made from sheet metal, with a hollow stem and a single vertical soldered seam; later ones were made by casting and still later by stamping (in sections soldered together and loaded to provide stability).
