The teapot form which evolved in Europe began as an imitation of the Chinese wine pot, but the flattened, oval shape and the wide base of the spout of this example echo the form of Ancient Roman oil lamps. This reflects the fashion for motifs and designs inspired by the Classical world in the early-nineteenth-century; this form of teapot, with a 'parapet' lip, was also widely reproduced in porcelain. Although the first silver teapots date from the late 17th century, by the time this teapot was made the object was a familiar one in many households. A wide choice of materials, including cheaper ceramics and glass as well as inexpensive metal products such as Sheffield plate and tinned copper, expanded the market for tea wares.
