It underwent later re-modelling and most of the surviving dates from c.160BC. The model shows the theatre as it would have appeared in its first form. The architecture of Ancient Greek theatres has strongly influenced later theatre design. The circular area partly surrounded by seating was called the ‘orchestra’, behind which was a raised stage (the ‘proskenion’) and an inner stage (the ‘skene’). These elements have inspired the architects of theatres as diverse as Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Royal National Theatre.","physicalDescription":"Scale model of a Ancient Greek theatre with semi-circle of terraced seating and raised stage, set in a hillside.
