It is not possible to say whether it was for use in the well-known classical genre called Peking Opera or for one of the many regional styles of theatre. It may have been worn as a costume by an actor playing a high official, one of the standard characters in Chinese theatre.","physicalDescription":"Robe for an actor (theatre costume). The robe is of scarlet satin, heavily embroidered in gold thread. In the centre of the front is a large dragon, and below are two other dragons, a temple, and various small designs. The neck and sleeves have similar embroidery. The hem has a deep border of wave pattern. At either side of the front panel is a strip of royal blue satin, embroidered in gold thread.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"gold thread","id":"x30128"}],"techniques":[{"text":"satin weave","id":"x37324"},{"text":"embroidered","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Raised gold embroidery on satin-weave silk","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Republican China","id":"x44957"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AR9434"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES313137"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Robe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880-1930","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1930-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of Mr Paul King through The Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"117","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"225","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1659/1933.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Robe for an actor (theatre costume), raised gold embroidery on satin-weave silk, China, 1880-1930","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Wilson, Verity. <u>Chinese Dress</u>, London: V&A Publications, 1986, Plate 76, p. 86."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"dragons","id":"x30096"},{"text":"wave pattern","id":"AAT9936"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.45-1933"],"accessionNumberNum":"45","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1933,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-19","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-12","availableToBook":false}}
