The patterns that appear on this textile are not often featured on other kinds of textiles. It is also unusual that cotton is used in place of the more commonly used material, silk. This cotton embroidery may provide some evidence of a folk design that had currency before imperial and aristocratic tastes overtook the visual culture of China.\r\n\r\nThis cross-stitch cotton was made as a bed valance. It might have hung along one side of the bed, reaching to the floor, or might have been attached around the top.","physicalDescription":"Valance of white cotton, embroidered with blue cotton thread in cross-stitch.
