It is possible that this piece was executed either by Qiao Shiguang, a leading lacquer artist from Xinjiang, or by one of his students.","physicalDescription":"A shallow circular dish on a raised footrim, lacquered on a wood core with eight alternate layers of black and red lacquer. The outermost layer is black, and the decoration is cut through the contrasting layers in the 'tixi' technique. The carved decoration shows stylised hills, water and a half-moon, and is executed in a deliberately non-traditional style.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Lacquer","id":"AAT14916"},{"text":"Wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"CArving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved lacquer, eight layers, on a wood core","categories":[{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[{"text":"20th century","id":"x36076"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AH0933"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES370508"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES370508"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}],[{"text":"Stand","id":"CIT0283869"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Xinjiang","id":"x29909"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1986","earliest":"1986-01-01","latest":"1986-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"35.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Da Ming Xuande nian zhi' incised on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Liberty's offered several of the products of the same factory in their Oriental Basement, Autumn 1986\nNotes on significance: Deliberately non-traditional style and an early example of self-conscious modernism in lacquer design","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, carved lacquer on a wood core, made in Xingiang in Shaanxi province, China, 1985-1986.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Craig Clunas, 'High Craft or Tourist Art?
