The scroll on which the Torah is written is wound on rollers called ‘Trees of Life’ (‘Atzei Hayyim’). It is customary to decorate the rollers with either a crown or a pair of rimmonim. The crown symbolises Majesty and the Law of Torah. The rimmonim evoke the bells worn on the High Priest’s robe, as described in the Book of Exodus. The word rimmonim comes from the Hebrew word for pomegranates. \r\n\r\n\nThis pair belonged to Philip Salomons who built the first collection of historical Judaica (Jewish ceremonial art) in Britain. His brother David became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London in 1855. Through their financial, cultural and political activities, the Salomons were important figures in the campaign for Jewish emancipation. This culminated in an 1858 act, which ended legal restrictions imposed on Britain’s Jewish population. The pair, together with a large part of Philip's collection, was acquired by Reuben Sasson and displayed in the Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition in London in 1887.\n\n","physicalDescription":"Silver-gilt and filigree rimmon (Torah finial).
