The militia guilds representing cross- and footbows frequently used Saint George as an emblem. These cups are thought to be the earliest surviving militia guild cups and which would have been displayed on the buffet at guild dinners. There is little remaining material evidence of the three militia guilds of Dordrecht (particularly compared to other Dutch towns) and so these cups are an interesting and important insight into the material culture of the guilds in the sixteenth century, a period when the Netherlands were increasing in wealth.\r\n\r\nMade by The Anonymous Master of the Heart, as the maker is known from the crowned heart that is his mark, these finely engraved cups are the product of one of the most highly regarded Dutch silversmiths of the late sixteenth century.","physicalDescription":"Parcel gilt cup and cover, with a finial of St George and the dragon. The cover is embossed and decorated with fruit and cherub's heads. The bowl is divided into three sections, and is engraved with panels of foliate scrollwork, snails, butterflies, strapwork, volutes, drapery, birds, fruit, and lions' masks holding rings. The bowl is also decorated with enamelled medallions of St George, his arms and a crossbow. There is an embossed baluster stem with dragons heads, and the foot is also embossed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"parcel gilded","id":"AAT233409"},{"text":"embossed","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"applied work","id":"AAT53646"},{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embossed, moulded, and engraved partially gilded (parcel-gilt) silver with applied work and enamel","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CC8156","2009CR4450","2009CR4178","2009CR4177","2009CR4176","2009CC8153","2009CC8151","2009CC8146","2009CD6392","2009CC8147"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA001","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA001","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"standing cup","id":""}],[{"text":"cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dordrecht","id":"x28808"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1592","earliest":"1592-01-01","latest":"1592-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.25:1-2009","id":"O235821"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"M.25:2-2009","id":"O235821"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Presented by Lady Marjorie Gilbert through the American Friends of the Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"37.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"12.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 04/03/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"1592 engraved on the inside of the cover","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Dateletters were used in Dordrecht for at least 1518 onwards, possibly 1503.
