It was worn at a forward angle on the crown of the head with the wearer's hair piled up high underneath. The bonnet was held on by the ribbons which tied in a large bow beneath the chin.\r\n\r\nThis period in the later 19th century saw a fashion in Britain and elsehwere for all forms of embellishment on dress and accessories. The diverse decorations on this bonnet include a decorative straw plait hood which is overlaid with lace, then trimmed with large pleats of velvet, adorned with artifical flowers and finished with a patterned ribbon. Left-over fabrics and embellishments were sometimes used. Wearers could adjust the design of such hats to suit their personal taste, for example adding a new trimming.\n\nInside there is a branded label. In Europe, such labelling originated with hats and shoes, spreading to dresses in the 1860s.","physicalDescription":"Bonnet made of brown silk velvet with gold-coloured straw, artificial flowers of colours including yellow and orange, lace, pins and figured ribbon in white, cream and browns.
