The lacquer worker slowly builds up alternate layers of red and black lacquer on a wood core and then carves through to reveal a scrolling pattern. This pattern had been popular in China from the 13th century through to the 20th century.","physicalDescription":"Decoration: Sword pommel rings\r\nA rectangular box, the top fitting over an internal riser on the base. The wood core is coverd with alternate layers of red and black lacquer, carved into a partern on the top and sides of 'sword pommel rings' ('Jian huan'). The lacquer is applied over a layer of grey composition, and thirteen alternate layers, with red at the bottom and black at the top, are visible to the naked eye. \r\nDespite the antiquity of the decorative scheme, the proportions of the box itself, and the stiff execution of the carving point to a 20th century date. The piece seems likely to be an interpretation of early styles rather than a copy or forgery.(cc 19/7/1984)\r\nDiscussed with James Watt, Metropolitan Museum, who argued for the authenticity of this object as probably of the Yuan period.
