In 1935 he studied lacquering under Matsuda Gonroku (1896-1986) in Tokyo, and he shows use of typical Gonroku techniques in his art, most notably crushed eggshell. This vase, a pre-liberation piece, reveals Shen's attempts to revitalise 20th-century Chinese decoration by moving beyond the Ming/Qing repertory to the motifs and techniques of earlier dynasties. The olive and brown streaks on the body of the vase recall the streaked glazes of Tang earthenware, a possible source of inspiration.","physicalDescription":"A high-shouldered baluster vase with raised short neck and lip, executed in smooth lacquer on a heavy wooden core. the lacquer technique is a variant of 'xipi': long lines of olive and brown lacquer, probably over a composition base have been laid vertically down the body then lacquered over in a reddish-buff. This has then been polished down to give a visual effect of a red body with olive and brown streaks. The flat uper surface of the rim is inlaid with small pieces of crushed eggshell. There is a red sealmark 'Shen Fuwen yin' on the recessed black lacquered base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shen Fuwen","id":"A3228"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"},{"text":"eggshell","id":"AAT191893"}],"techniques":[{"text":"inlay","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lacquered wood, inlaid with crushed eggshell","categories":[{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[{"text":"20th century","id":"x36093"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2025PH8511","2006AH0935"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"44","id":"THES49802"},"free":"","case":"CA051","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shanghai","id":"x29883"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1947","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1951-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"43.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Shen Fuwen yin' stamped in red on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"From maker to vendor.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase by Shen Fuwen (b.1906), lacquered wood, inlaid with crushed eggshell, Shanghai, China, 1947","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Sichuan qiqi', Chugoku kogei bijutsu sosho.
