In 1935 he studied lacquering under Matsuda Gonroku (1896-1986) in Tokyo. This vase reveals Shen's attempts to revitalise 20th-century Chinese decoration by drawing on the repertory of earlier dynasties. The body is of plain dark brown lacquer, with a slightly raised band of sandy-gold lacquer, on which is a hunting scene in archaistic style in black lacquer relief. The figures are in the style of bronze decoration associated with Tangshan, Hebei province, in the 5th century BC.","physicalDescription":"A vase, executed in dry lacquer technique without core, on a high flaring footrim, with a bulbous body and slightly everted plain mouth.
