Across Europe, this was partly achieved by displaying valuable glass, ceramics or silver, like this dish, on a makeshift, stepped structure. In Italy, this was called a ‘credenza’ (meaning ‘trust’, a reference to the practice of testing food for poison), while in France and England it was a ‘buffet’. Sometimes food and functional objects were included on the bottom tier. Once dinner was over, the shelves were dismantled and the valuables locked away.","physicalDescription":"Silver dish (one of a pair) depicting the labours of Hercules. Circular with narrow, upturned flange along the rim. The centre recessed to form the low foot. The centre section is embossed and chased with running foliage involving animals. The remainder is embossed and chased with foliage framing profile heads and scenes from the life of Herculaes. These last are as follows: The two serpents, the boar of Erymanthus, the bird of Ceryneia, the centaur, Nessus, the apples of the Hesperides and Cerberus.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"amalgam gilding","id":"AAT53790"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt, embossed and chased.","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CA2914"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"62","id":"THES49739"},"free":"","case":"CA12","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Portugal","id":"x29941"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1540","earliest":"1535-01-01","latest":"1544-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Dr W.L.
