FE.71-1997\r\n","date":{"text":"04/11/2015","earliest":"2015-11-04","latest":"2015-11-04"}},{"text":"BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS\r\nWood covered in black lacquer with gold, brown and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and togidashi-e lacquer and shell\r\nWind-blown maple tree and the characters fuku kaze ni (the winds that blow) from the first line of an old poem\r\nInside of the box with inkstone, brushes, penknife and pricker; water dropper of\r\nsilvered metal in the form of a maple leaf\r\nSigned Taisai, with a seal-mark Koma\r\nAbout 1900-1915\r\nFE.71-1997\r\nTaisai is thought to have been a pupil of Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), the best pupil of Shibata Zeshin (1807-91). Zeshin was the most creative influence in the field of lacquer during the second half of the 19th century. The design of this box probably refers to poem number 99 in the earliest of the imperially-commissioned poetry anthologies, the Kokinwakashū (Collection of poems ancient and modern).
