Addey (1912-1999) worked as a commercial artist for over sixty years, working for Dorland Advertising and Mitchells among other London advertising firms. His work shows the range of products and illustration styles, from aeroplanes and cars, beer and perfume, to satirical cartoons and calendar pin-up girls and is representative of the post war boom in advertising during the late 1940s and 1950s.\r\n\r\nThis pen and wash drawing is a design for a cartoon . The cartoon shows a boat sailing in to the distance. On the boat a captain is shouting at a sailor who has fired six shots in to the deck of the ship that they are on. Six large holes are shown where the shots have been fired. This type of illustration is a key example of how humour was used to keep up morale during World War II.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink illustration for a cartoon titled \"de Day\" showing two sailors on a ship","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Addey, Wilfrid R.","id":"A26078"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EC7078"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"189","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940s","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1949-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by K.
