Collins, Devon. Thought to have been a Spitalfields silk worn at the court of Queen Anne by his ancestor, Dame Martha Scawen. The keeper of textiles, A.F. Kendrick dated this piece to the first half of the 18th century and noted that 'in Mr Luther Hooper's opinion, quite possibly the work of French silk weavers settled in England'. Reattributed to France and to the Lyonnais designer Jean Revel by Peter Thornton in 1959. It may be the work of French silk-weavers who settled in England after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.  The design is almost certainly by the famous silk-designer from Lyon, Jean Revel","date":{"text":"about 1980","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1980-12-31"}},{"text":"Dress fabric\r\nFrench (Lyon), about 1735.\r\nBrocaded silk.\r\nProbably designed by Jean Revel (1684-17510.\r\n\r\nJean Revel was the son of a painter and trained in that profession, but became involved in the silk industry in Lyon, possible at first as an art teacher to prospective silk designers.
