The palette is known as the 'austere three colours' due to the absence of red. The decoration consists of items from the babao (Eight Precious) and bajixiang (Eight Auspicious) groups, namely the pearl, books, picture, chime stone, artemisia leaf and conch shell. These, together with lotus and prunus, are painted in a rather careless manner over a ground of waves. The mark Liancheng qishi (rare stone worth several cities) written within a double circle in underglaze blue is on the base.\r\n\r\nThe way the waves are represented by concentric rings is inherited from earlier times, suggesting that this bowl dates to the early years of the Kangxi period. Liancheng qishi can be a commendatory mark, asserting that the bowl (here the word 'stone' is synonymous to 'pottery') is as valuable as several cities.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in coloured enamels","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AW2039","2010DE8212","2010DE7914","2006AW2038","2006AW2036"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136 (VA)","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"BOWL","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1662-1680","earliest":"1657-01-01","latest":"1680-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The mark Liancheng qishi (rare stone worth several cities) written within a double circle in underglaze blue is on the base.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
