The outside is painted with a repetitive pattern consisting of a brocade ball beneath a canopy, flanked by pictures, pearls and halberds.  The pearl and the picture are two of the babao (Eight Precious) objects, whilst the canopy is a member of the bajixiang (Eight Auspicious) group.  The halberd is a pun for 'good luck', as both words pronounce ji.  There is a leafy border round the rim on the inside.  On the base written in underglaze blue within a double circle is the mark Yiyou Tang chuangu zhi (made by the Hall of Good Friends in ancient style).\r\n\r\nTerms like yiyou (good friend), shengyou (noble friend) and yiyou dingyu (good friend, tripod and jade) appear on many underglaze blue-decorated porcelains of Kangxi date, thus they are more likely to be marks of kilns rather than owners.
