The two handles on the shoulders are in the form of kui dragons. The neck was probably damaged at some later time and cut down, leaving a white rim. On the crackled white base is the mark Shigan Caotang (Thatched cottage by the brook) written in underglaze blue.\r\nShigan is one of the songs in Shijing, Xiaoya (Book of Songs: Lesser Odes Chapter), the first two lines reading:\r\nThe brook flows\r\nThe southern mountains deep.\r\nThe song is about building houses and the joy of home. By reference to this song the owner of the flask, whose identity is still to be revealed, was implying that his thatched cottage (not to be taken literally, it could have been a big mansion) was an agreeable dwelling place.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, with copper red glaze","categories":[{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qianlong","id":"AAT18486"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AW2000","2006AW1998"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136 (VA)","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"6","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"BOTTLE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1765-1795","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1795-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Marie Dumergue Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"31.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On the crackled white base is the mark Shigan Caotang (Thatched cottage by the brook) written in underglaze blue.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mrs. Marie Adeline Dumergue, accessioned in 1912.
