Japanese men used netsuke to suspend various pouches and containers from their sashes by a silk cord. Netsuke had to be small and not too heavy, yet bulky enough to do the job. They needed to be compact with no sharp protruding edges, yet also strong and hardwearing. Above all, they had to have the means for attaching a cord. Netsuke were made in a variety of forms, the most widely appreciated being the <i>katabori</i> (shape carving), a three-dimensional carving, such as this one in the form of a coiled snake.","physicalDescription":"Netsuke of a snake coiled in a heap, in <i>katabori</i> ('shape carving') form, with its head at the top of the pile and the tip of its tail energing from the bottom and almost reaching the head, in carved and stained wood with inlaid eyes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Tametaka","id":"A25876"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved and stained wood with inlaid eyes","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[{"text":"EDO","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2015HT5085","2014HD0239","2018KV7642"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"45","id":"THES49801"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Netsuke","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1800","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed 'Tametaka'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
