In 1986, Cathy Jordan became a partner in the business. They collaborated together to create inventive jewellery, accessories, and by the late 1980s, unusual headwear such as this bowler overlaid with a tracery of silver-plated brass. The conjunction of the silver metal with the traditional City worker's hat creates a stylish variation on an established classic.\r\n\r\nAtelier bowler hats, such as this one, were created from laser-etched artwork. Some sheets of metal were left in plain brass, while others were oxidised to give an antique finish.\r\n\r\nAtelier worked with many top designers, using their jewellery skills to create decorative shoe clips, heels for stiletto shoes, and even neon-coloured, full-size armour. They designed hats for Diana, Princess of Wales and the pop music group Duran Duran.","physicalDescription":"Black felt woman's bowler hat with laser-etched silver-plated brass ornamentation laid over the crown.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Atelier","id":"A25871"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver-plated","id":"x38860"},{"text":"brass (alloy)","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"wool (hair)","id":"AAT14074"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plated","id":"AAT53991"},{"text":"felted","id":"AAT232049"},{"text":"pierced","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"embossed","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"laser","id":"x37632"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool felt with applied laser-etched, silver-plated brass decoration; the domed form achieved by hammering the metal over a wooden form with a mallet. Trained in fashion, Cathi Jordan became a partner in 1986 and the two have collaborated ever since, producing an inventive range of jewellery accessories, and more recently, headwear.\r\n\r\nAtelier works with many top designers, complementing their lines with anything from portable neon, full size armour and glass rings to decorative shoe clips and stiletto heels. They have designed hats for Duran Duran as well as the Princess of Wales.\r\n\r\nTheir hat range is represented here by a clever and skilful departure from the classic city bowler. In a sensitive melding of diverse materials, Julian Brogden and Cathi Jordan have created a stylistic hybrid. Their approach is refreshing and representative of an exciting new generation of milliners.\r\n\r\nGiven by Atelier\r\nT.176-1990","date":{"text":"1990","earliest":"1990-01-01","latest":"1990-12-31"}}],"partNumbers":["T.176-1990"],"accessionNumberNum":"176","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1990,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2021MU9846"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2009-04-27","availableToBook":true}}
