It is made from a combination of the shou (longevity) character in the centre, surrounded by five bats, five further shou characters, and five swastika symbols. The quality of the dish is very fine. It was made for the use of the Xianfeng Emperor (reigned 1851-1861) and is inscribed with the name of one of the rooms in the imperial palace.","physicalDescription":"This dish is painted in underglaze blue with a shou (longevity) character in the centre, surrounded by five bats, five further shou characters, and five swastika symbols. The swastika was originally a Buddhist symbol but evolved to represent 'ten thousand'. Together the bat, shou character and swastika form the decorative theme 'ten thousand happiness and longevity'. On the base is the mark Lüxin Tang zhi (made for the Hall of Faith-keeping) in seal script.\r\nLüxin Shuwu (Library of Faith-keeping) was the studio name of the Xianfeng Emperor, and Lüxin Tang (Hall of Faith-keeping) was probably a variant of that name. The quality of the dish and the very neatly-written mark definitely point to the piece being an imperial ware.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"cobalt","id":"AAT221155"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, painted in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Xianfeng","id":"AAT18492"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AW2048","2006AW2047"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"11","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1851-1861","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1861-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Addis Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"16.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"履信堂製","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Made for the Hall of Faith-keeping","transliteration":"Lüxin tang zhi ","type":"","note":"On base in seal script and underglaze blue"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, porcelain painted in underglaze blue, China (Jingdezhen), Xianfeng studio mark and period, 1851-61","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Wilson, Ming, Rare marks on Chinese ceramics, London : Published by the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1998","id":"AUTH357696"},"details":"9","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.78-1983"],"accessionNumberNum":"78","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":1983,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-08","availableToBook":false}}
